Oklahoma City Prepares to Host Canoe Slalom and Softball Events for LA28 Olympics

Oklahoma City is set to play a significant role in the upcoming 2028 Summer Olympics by hosting the canoe slalom and softball competitions. This opportunity places the city on the global stage, showcasing its commitment to sports and international collaboration.

Major Investments in Infrastructure

To prepare for these events, the Oklahoma Department of Commerce has partnered with local LA28 Olympic venues through the Business Expansion Incentive Program (BEIP), investing over $100 million in facility enhancements. Key projects include:

  • Devon Park (Oklahoma Softball Park): Upgrades to meet Olympic standards, ensuring a world-class experience for athletes and spectators.
  • RIVERSPORT (Oklahoma Whitewater Center): Installation of a headgate at the competition channel’s top, allowing for adjustable water flow to attract future international competitions.

Additionally, Oklahoma City University (OCU) will serve as the Olympic Satellite Village, accommodating over 170 athletes, coaches, and delegates from more than 30 countries. This initiative underscores the city’s dedication to providing top-tier facilities and hospitality for the global sporting community.

State and Local Support

The Oklahoma City Council has unanimously approved a resolution expressing full support and commitment to staging these Olympic events. The resolution includes commitments such as providing necessary city venues, including whitewater and softball facilities, the Oklahoma City Convention Center, Scissortail Park, Paycom Center, and other city properties as needed.

Furthermore, state lawmakers have allocated $15 million to the Department of Commerce to support infrastructure and transportation improvements essential for hosting the Olympic events. This funding will be managed by Team OKC, a local group dedicated to ensuring the success of Oklahoma’s Olympic endeavors.

Economic and Cultural Impact

Hosting Olympic events is expected to have a substantial economic impact on Oklahoma City. The city has a history of successfully hosting significant national and international championship events, such as the NCAA Women’s College World Series, which annually attracts over 110,000 attendees and generates more than $25 million in direct revenue. The upcoming Olympic events are anticipated to further boost the local economy, tourism, and global recognition.

Mayor David Holt emphasized the significance of this opportunity, stating, “Becoming a big league city has changed us forever. This agreement represents the culmination of our work to secure our long-term status as a big league city.”

As preparations continue, Oklahoma City stands ready to welcome the world, demonstrating its capacity to host international events and its commitment to fostering global connections through sports.
