Oklahoma City Gears Up for 2028 Olympic Events

Oklahoma City is set to host the Canoe Slalom and Softball competitions during the 2028 Olympic Games, marking a significant milestone in the city’s international engagement. This opportunity underscores OKC’s commitment to fostering global connections and enhancing its profile on the world stage.

Hosting Olympic Events

The decision to host these events was solidified in March 2025 when the Los Angeles City Council approved the LA28 revised venue proposal, relocating Canoe Slalom to Oklahoma City. Mayor David Holt expressed gratitude for this opportunity, emphasizing the city’s readiness to welcome the world. He stated, “Two sports from the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Los Angeles – Softball and Canoe Slalom – will be staged in their entirety in America’s 20th-largest city. This is really happening. The Olympics are coming to OKC.”

In April 2025, the Oklahoma City Council unanimously approved a resolution expressing full support and commitment to staging these events. The resolution included commitments such as providing necessary city venues, including whitewater and softball facilities, the Oklahoma City Convention Center, Scissortail Park, Paycom Center, and other city properties as needed.

Community Engagement and Economic Impact

Community leaders in northeast Oklahoma City are actively engaging residents to discuss the potential impacts and opportunities associated with hosting Olympic events. This initiative aims to ensure that the benefits of the Olympics are widely shared and that the community is well-prepared for the influx of visitors and global attention.

Hosting these events is expected to bring significant economic benefits to the city. The Oklahoma City Convention Center, which celebrated its fifth anniversary in January 2026, has already demonstrated the city’s capacity to host large-scale events. In its first five years, the center hosted over 700 events, welcomed nearly a million attendees, and generated an estimated $147.4 million in direct spending.

Looking Ahead

As the 2028 Olympics approach, Oklahoma City continues to prepare its venues and infrastructure to meet the demands of hosting international competitions. The city’s proactive approach and commitment to excellence position it as a capable and welcoming host for athletes and visitors from around the world.
